Mediocrity isn't an option for David Gold
DAVID Gold has admitted that he'd sooner ride the rollercoaster of promotion and relegation than settle for midtable mediocrity.
The Blues chairman has seen more highs and lows than Alton Towers in his 14-year tenure at St Andrew's with the club rising from the depths of the third tier to the lofty heights of the Premier League.
After the major low of last season's final day relegation, Gold is looking for Alex McLeish's Blues to give him another moment to remember by bouncing back as champions.
And the millionaire also wants his club to becoming record-breakers by becoming the first team in Premier League history to bounce back at the first time of asking twice.
The thrills and spills of a relegation dogfight and promotion scrap may not be good for the heart but Gold insists that he would take that over being serially stuck in the middle of a division.
"It would be unbelievable if we can get straight back again because it has never been done before, we could break a record," enthused Gold. "From adversity and from the depths of relegation we have found optimism and that is something special.
"Some people might not like promotion, relegation, promotion, relegation but would you want to be a Middlesbrough? Stuck in midtable season after season. Some people would say 'yes' because you get to see sides like Manchester United and Chelsea every season.
"In the Championship it's the same with sides like Preston who have been in there years, occasionally looked like making the play-offs but never been in danger of relegation. Some people would settle for that because it's better for your heart.
"But I'm looking at the positive side of things. The highs and lows are what football is all about."
