Birmingham City still hoping to sign Bobo Balde

ALEX McLeish remains determined to add to his squad before the transfer window shuts.

Defender Bobo Balde remains his top target, but despite several rounds of talks no agreement has yet been reached.

McLeish, though, hopes a deal can be done.

It has been reported Blues have offered Balde, who is available on a free transfer, a basic wage of £22,000-a-week, plus £10,000 appearance fee.

But Balde is said to be holding out for a pay-off from Celtic before he departs.

"I'm hoping to do at least one transfer before the end of the window, but if I could get two it would give us a bit more security," said the Blues boss.

"Bobo's away with Guinea on international duty so we can't take things any further until he gets back.

"But we are hopeful a deal could be done. We've looked at a million centre-backs and he is still the one who stands out. His physical presence is superb and he also has experience of playing at the top level. I don't like to talk too much about transfer deals, particularly as it's very early days. But hopefully we can meet with the player and come to an agreement by the end of next week."

McLeish is also concerned about the options in midfield.

He added: "There will be opportunities to loan but I would prefer to take in players that are tried and trusted rather than a loan tipped as one for the future"
